"All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned--the biggest word of all--look."

Volunteer/Community Service Application

An application must be filled out to be considered for all volunteer and community service opportunities.  Follow this link to download the application, or you may pick one up at the Circulation desk.  The completed application may be submitted at the Circulation desk.  Once your application is reviewed, a volunteer coordinator will contact you to schedule an orientation.

Current Volunteer Opportunities
  • General Volunteering for adults 18 years or older

Contact Esther Chase in Outreach Services if you're interested in helping with basic tasks like making game kits, shelf reading, light cleaning, and more.  Volunteer hours are available in two hour increments Monday through Friday.

  • Adult Literacy & English as a Second Language (ESL)

Contact Esther Chase in Outreach Services if you're interested in helping to lead ESL conversation classes or ESL book groups. If you're not all that social, consider helping to prepare learning materials or write book reviews on short fiction from the literacy collection.  Experience is not necessary and training is available.  Having 4 or more years of experience with learning a foreign language helps, yet there's no need to be fluent in that language.  Volunteer hours are available in one hour increments (or more) on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Homework Help

Contact Esther Chase in Outreach Services if you're interested in volunteering as a tutor for K-5 students.  Volunteer hours are available Tuesdays from 4-8 p.m., Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.

  • Computer Tutoring for Small Groups

Contact Esther Chase in Outreach Services if you're interested in teaching basic computer skills to small groups of adults and seniors.  We currently have classes scheduled for Wednesday mornings from 10-11, Thursday evenings from 7-8, and Saturday mornings from 9:30-10:30.  You may elect to teach as many or as few classes as you would like.

We are also looking for bilingual tutors who might like to teach computer classes in Spanish, Polish or Arabic.

Community Service Opportunities
  • For voluntary community service fulfillment

Contact Angelica Soto in Youth Services if you are under 18 and looking to complete hours for school, church, or other commitments.

  • For court-ordered community service fulfillment

Contact Esther Chase in Outreach Services if you are 14 and older and looking to fulfill court-ordered community service requirements. We can accommodate up to 8 hours per week of community service.  Please plan ahead in order to complete your hours by the date set by the court.

Looking for a place to warm up?

The Berwyn Library is one of five designated warming centers within the City.

And we have so many events going on, and quiet places to read, or computers to use, it's a good place for anyone, one person or even the whole family, to spend a couple of hours out of the cold.
