| Friends of Fisher House - Illinois (FOFH-IL) | #253 -- 3149 Dundee Rd. Northbrook IL 60062 assistance@fofhil.org P: 847-254-2912 | Fisher House is a handsome, complete and fully furnished "Home Away From Home" on the grounds of Hines VA Hospital, with 20 private-bedroom suites. (FOFH-IL) is dedicated to financial, volunteer and emotional support for Illinois Fisher Houses built by the Fisher House Foundation mission to support America's military in their time of need. These "homes away from home" enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful time -- during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and their families and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Since Inception (1990) the Fisher House program throughout the U.S. and Germany has provided: • Families served: More than 130,000 • Number of families of combat casualties: Approx. 7,500 • Number of lodging days offered: over 3 million • Saved families more than $150 million in lodging and transportation cost Illinois' first Fisher House depends on the local community for all forms of support which can be reviewed at the website. To date, over 160 military families have been guests free of charge at Hines VA Fisher House with their everyday needs provided. Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital is located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago on a 147-acre campus. Hines is the largest VA in the state of Illinois, where more than one million Veterans live. The Hospital offers primary, extended and specialty care to Veterans who primarily live in Cook, DuPage and Will Counties in Illinois. Hines Specialized clinical programs at the hospital include Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy and Cardiovascular Surgery. Hines is authorized to operate close to 500 inpatient beds, including 199 nursing home beds. The Hospital also runs six community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Manteno, Elgin, Oak Lawn, Aurora, LaSalle, and Joliet. More than 631,000 patient visits occurred at Hines Hospital or at one of our CBOCs in fiscal year 2009. The Hospital currently provides care to over 56,000 of America’s Veterans. In addition to those programs already mentioned, a partial list of specialized programs includes: a Spinal Cord Injury Residential Care Facility, AMVETS Reactivation Center, Community Living Center, Preservation, Amputation, Care and Treatment Program (PACT), Hospice Care, Interventional Cardiology, Respite Care, Substance Abuse Programs, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Program, and Homeless Chronically Mentally Ill Program. Hines VAH also serves as a Polytrauma Center for severely injured Veterans and is skilled in treating patients with Traumatic Brain Injuries. |
