Learning to read and write is critical for success in school and throughout life. By starting early, we recognize learning to read begins long before a child enters school. Public librarians have long been a child’s first opportunity to interact with books. For many years librarians have been providing preschool storytimes and more recently are providing lapsits for babies, toddler times for walkers, and outreach services to child care centers and preschools.
Early childhood and early literacy research is not always easily accessible to parents and caregivers – or even to library staff. The Public library Association and the Association for Library Services to Children, in cooperation with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the National institute of Health, have partnered to bring important information about early literacy to library systems around the country. Our library plays a key role in disseminating information about the importance of early literacy to parents, child care providers, early childhood educators, children’s advocates and political decision makers. The Berwyn Public Library is a community partner in the common public goal of helping children become successful readers and learners.
In addition to the Every Child Ready to Read materials, the Outreach Department has created and packaged thematic storytimes for preschool and daycare providers that can be shared at their facilities. Examples of themes are: Cats, Seasons, Hibernation, Russian Stories, the various holidays and Transportation. Each packet contains 3 books, flannel story, songs, and an activity. Please call Outreach Services at 708-795-8000, x3020 to request a storytime at your facility.
